Our cars do not drive themselves yet, but the day is coming. how far away will it be and what will it look like when the day finally arrives? These are very difficult questions, and even the greatest of oracles would have difficulty putting their finger on the precise moment when the self-driving auto will take over the roads of daily life.
We have made substantial progress as we move toward fully autonomous vehicles. Already, lots of ingenuity has been integrated into our vehicles. There are miniaturized cameras and sensors that assist us as we parallel park or back up, warning us of potential collisions, allowing us to avoid damage or injury.
There is quite a number of questions regarding human-machine interaction that have yet to be answered and, given the early stage, the questions aren’t even fully formulated to ask. Imagine some of the questions that need to be considered.
- What will happen when the car makes a mistake?
- What will be considered an appropriate response to the error? Who will be held responsible?
- How will we interact with our cars? Will we use voice commands or some other method of communication?
- Will your vehicle have a name and a personality?
One truly spectacular point for those in the arena of future car design is that creativity will abound. No one knows what the future will look like. Hence, designers are free to apply their signature to the future. The result of this creativity, thus far, has been amazing.
Imagine a personal drone assigned to each car that can be used as a scout to keep an eye out for other cars or pedestrians, or perhaps restaurants or gas stations. We may have that are cars able to read our emails and decide our next destination, remember our favorite restaurants, know the best route to work and adapt to help keep us on schedule.
There are problems in designing these new vehicles. The world where they will operate doesn’t yet exist. Designers must contemplate how society will change and what the infrastructure will be like. Things such as these must be considered as vehicles of the future will be reliant on many new and different in order to be successful and adapt to the end users, us. The vehicle of the future is still in its infancy, but the possibilities are endless.
