California Real Estate License Reciprocity

Requirements for a California Real Estate License

In California, to become a licensed agent, you must complete a real estate license application and pass the state exam. Additionally, you must meet certain age requirements of 18 years old and reside within the state.

Obtaining your real estate license in California is a relatively straightforward process. First, you must complete 135 hours of pre-licensing education at an accredited school.

Once you have finished the course, take the state exam and earn a score of at least 70% to be eligible to receive your license. The exam takes approximately 3 hours to finish and includes 150 multiple-choice questions covering Californian laws, regulations, and rules.

Requirements for an Out-of-State Broker License

If you are an out-of-state licensed salesperson, you can obtain a California broker license if you have held your broker license in another state for two years and completed 120 hours of real estate study the prior year. In order to do this, you must pass both the State portion of the exam as well as pass a background check.
