How to Renew a North Carolina Real Estate License

Handle Your Renewal Application & Fee

Complete Continuing Education Courses
Every year, you must complete at least 8 hours of continuing education courses that focus on legislation or relevant subjects. These could include courses such as insurance coverage and property law. You will also need to complete a four-hour Broker-in-Charge Update course if you are a full broker in North Carolina.
Once you’ve completed the required education, renewing your North Carolina real estate license can be accomplished online. Be sure to submit the renewal application and payment at least 10 days before its expiration.
First-Time Licensees Renewal

North Carolina Real Estate License Renewal Cost
The cost to renew your real estate license in North Carolina as a provisional or full broker is $45. If you allow your license to go past the expiration date and you need to reinstate it, you will need to pay an additional $90. These fees don’t include the cost of your continuing education courses.
Renew an Inactive NC Real Estate License
If your North Carolina real estate license has lapsed, renewing it may seem daunting. Your real estate license allows you to practice selling or leasing property within North Carolina and earn a commission for services rendered. Professional license holders are required to attend continuing education courses every year or risk having their real estate license declared inactive or forfeited altogether.
If your license has been inactive for less than six months, you will be able to pay the $90 reinstatement fee and submit your activation/affiliation form to activate your license again. This can all be done online through the NCREC website.
When your real estate license in North Carolina has been inactive for six months to two years, you will need to complete 30 hours of post-licensing education within six months of applying for reinstatement. It’s also necessary to file a reinstatement application and pass a background check. The $90 reinstatement fee will also need to be passed.
If you don’t want to complete the 30-hour post-licensing course, you can retake and pass the National and State real estate exam.
Anytime you let your real estate license in North Carolina become inactive for more than two years, you will need to start all over with the pre-licensing course.
